5 Tips to improve your photography skills with a digital camera

Hey, If you have recently bought a DSLR or digital camera and you are looking to learn how to use it, then check out the vid further down the page.  I’m Scott and I have small photography business, doing weddings and some product photography.

I love the artistic side to photography and spend a lot of my time shooting street and nature photography. I recently started a new you tube channel to try and share what I have learnt over the years with the aim of helping new photographers.

This vid goes through 5 basic tips to help you learn what the camera is doing and help get you off auto mode and on to using manual. I have broken down the vid below to explain what I go through so you can see if its something you want to watch.

I also do some longer more technical tutorials on my channel if you are interested in the machines to it all. free feel to check them out.

Thanks for visiting The Riley Shot and don’t for get to let me know what you think by leaving a comment , like, or subscribe to follow me on my you tube Journey.

5 tips to get you from auto to manual

I spend 2 mins on each of the five tips in the below order trying to share my knowledge to help you learn as a photography & Artist. If

1. Exposure – I go through how to set your camera up in RAW as opposed to JPEG. I also show you which icon to look out for when taking a picture that shows you if you are exposed correctly.
2. Aperture priority mode – I explain this setting and how to use it
3. Focus – How to use the focus button correctly
4. Composition- I explain 2 forms of Photography composition in a simple way. Rule of Thirds and Leading lines
5. Auto – Might sound daft, but I show you how to learn from Auto and use it to your advantage.

Hi, Im Scott, http://www.therileyshot.com . I have recently set up a channel to try and pass on some of my photography knowledge I have learnt over the 10-12 years I have been shooting.

I have seen a lot of chatter out in youtube and instagram about too much tech talk in photography and i think we can get lost in it, sometimes. Therefore, I’m going to try keep that out of today and just talk about what you need to do to be creative. Thats the fun part, right?

My aim is simple, to put a vid out each week of either a vlog about my week with photography or a tutorial , or maybe a mix. Im new to short film making so go gentle on the filming but feel free to question the images I show so we can all learn. I want to keep things simple with my vids, so each new vid i am trying to improve one more thing, so I hope you can see that. let me know what you think and come join me on my little journey 🙂

Check out my other vids for more details of the things I have talked about in the video.

Landscape Photography – Marsden Moorland fires

lifestyle, nikon, The Riley Shot, travel, Yorkshire

Hey. So this week I was going to do a blogpost on some of my old California shots but after the wild fires near my favourite Yorkshire moorland.  I will show you the impact of leaving a BBQ in the middle of wild heather on a dry day, instead. Hope you like it

New start – The Riley Shot Blog.

In the last 6 months I have written 20 different drafts of what I was shooting and none have made it to my website. I don’t know if its just me but I must re read my work 100 times until I talk my self out of publishing anything. The main reason I set up my small business and this website was to shoot weddings, which I love, and to show my other work like landscape and travel photography. However, add a 40 hour job, 6 month old baby and editing the weddings that I shoot on the weekend, it doesn’t leave much time for blogging the other shoots I do..

So, I have my new aim, just to blog my latest work and hopefully share some things i have learnt over the years with people who are new to photography, simple really, just show what I am up to and what I’m learning. Thats what I’m going to do. This week you can see my latest portraits and next week I’ll be showing off some of my landscape travel shots from last year, with my aim of adding small blogs each week of my adventures. Now, adventures could be a tad misleading, at the moment I have a 6 month old baby, so I won’t be flying off to the USA again any time soon but I will defiantly be pushing my ability with a few projects lined up. I hope you start of with really simply stuff that I think will help you take better photos, then ideally we could get in to the details and I’ll explain how I learnt these things.

Next week, it will be Yosemite national park from late last year. After that it will be Portraits and hopefully (health permitted) more landscapes, for now I hope you enjoy this weeks blog.

Also, I will be adding a small shop page soon with prints for sale, however, for now if you would like a print please email me.
